2017 Whit Friday Marches

Adjudicators' Remarks - March: Jupiter

Lydgate - Derek Southcott:
Band Number 4
Contest points: 163
Placing: 51st
Performance: Fair, Good at times
Section work/balance: Cornets, Horns, Bar/euphs, Troms, Basses - all Fair
Use of Dynamics/Musicianship: Fair
Intonation: Good/Fair
More ff to start please and 1st note not together. Solo cornet please develop your vibrato. Much more could be made of the dynamics. I feel this band is capable of a better performance with more rehearsal. As you progress the semiquavers are not together.

Grotton - Nicholas Garman:
Band Number 11
Placing: 36th
Good opening though not all parts played the same note lengths on arpeggios. Well done solo cornet. There's not much difference between mf + f in the next section. There were a number of intonation concerns in the bass tune. The trio was a bit heavy in the melody for 'p'. Oh dear - not everyone got all the flats before the DC. Some good chords from middle and lower band but they don't all finish together. I could take more sop all the way through please. Thank you for your performance.

Lees - Alan Fernie:
Band Number 15
Placing: 29th
Good sounds and ensemble is well prepared. MD grades dynamics - some issues in unison lines and watch phrase ends. Key eludes 1 or 2 in trio? but this is a good band, well directed. Final cadence still has ensemble issues - keep listening!

Scouthead - Jonathan Pippen:
Band Number 21
Contest points: 166
Placing: 33rd
Good opening. Band eventually gets under the soloist at repeat. Then good balance. Good bass solo. Could do with a little more tuba sound to match troms which is good. Well accomp in cornets. Would be great to hear a contest 'p' in trio as the whole march is quite loud. But what you do you do well. Great cornet again. Could the band be a little less? A good performance. Much to commend, very few accidents and a great cornet soloist. Thank you.

Delph - Mike Kilroy:
Band Number 37
Placing: 43rd
Solid sound but a little rushed in the duple quavers. Bravo cornet. A few balance issues but then the bass solo is good. Solid sounds and balanced well. The transition to trio is not so good, but your trio is well done balanced and tuneful. D.C. is better again and your ensemble is now excellent through to and including the bass solo. Well done.

Denshaw - Allan Holdsworth:
Band Number 34
Points: 164
Placing: 26th
Good opening along with tempo. Phrasing endings good. A good tuneful balance. Slight over pitched notes and tuning heard. Dynamics contrast from ff-pp. All in order. A little more rhythmic pulse gives that extra sparkle. The band play the march well with good detail heard. A pleasant performance heard.

Dobcross - Kevin Wadsworth:
