Second place again!

27 November 2011 New Forest Brass competed at the Wessex Winter Contest in Weymouth yesterday. We completed a clean sweep of second placed contest finishes for 2011, after also coming second in the regionals and national finals! Our performance of Philip Sparke's Saint-Saens Variations was unfortunately not quite enough to claim the fourth section title. However, we were placed 10th in the overall standings (out of 19 competing bands), which is a positive result as we beat the entire field of third section bands as well as bands from the first and second sections. The contest was followed by a goodbye party for Ellyn Tyack, our euphonium player, who is moving away from the area. We are sad to see you go Ellyn!

25 September 2011 New Forest Brass are officially the best fourth section band in England! Drawn number 7 yesterday, the band put in a fantastic performance of Henry V Overture, by Vaughan Williams, and were rewarded with the second place trophy by the adjudicators, who said that the top two clearly stood out from the rest of the field. Only Melingriffith 2, from Wales, were placed above NFB. Celebrations went on long into the night!

24 July 2011 New Forest Brass performed at Netley Marsh Steam Fair today. After playing hymns for a service at lunchtime, we performed an afternoon concert in the beer tent. Our eardrums are just recovering from the steam engine whistles!

16 July 2011 On a day when 6 cruise ships were leaving Southampton, New Forest Brass played Ventura out of the docks on its way to Bermuda. It had rained non-stop all morning but incredibly the rain stopped half an hour before we were to play. It poured it down during the safety messages while we had a break, before we finished in glorious sunshine as the ship pulled away. No sooner had we packed up but the rain started again and continued for the rest of the day. Lucky day!

Race for Life

10 July 2011 New Forest Ladies, accompanied by our youngest groupie and the Holly Dog, joined hundreds of other women on Southampton Common for the 2011 Race for Life. We were taking part in the event in memory of Trevor, who had been a friend and member of the band for 30 years, plus others affected by cancer. After starting at the back, due to a pushchair and animal, the 5km was completed at a brisk walking pace in just under an hour. Everyone then hurriedly relocated to Hythe to join the rest of the band for the Summer Festival concert.

12 March 2011 New Forest Brass have come second in the fourth section of the West of England regional championships in Torquay! On our annual trip to the English Riviera, we were drawn 9th out of 22 bands, and put in a strong performance of John Golland's Prelude, Song and Dance. We will be joining 19 other bands from around the UK in the national fourth section finals, which will take place at Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday 24th September 2011. Well done everybody!
