Adjudicators' Remarks - Partita for Band (Postcards from Home)

Order of play: 10, Placing: 2nd

Frank Renton:

1. Good start - good sound but into B starts to get edgy. Allargando - got untuneful.

2. Some good playing but so deliberate that it stops the feeling of 'dance'. Lots of good detail + clarity here. Well done.

3. Well done Euph. Why get slower at A the music must move forward. This all becomes very static. But much of the playing works well. Good close.

4. Good pace again but drops at A - then picks up into C. Some good playing here but gets a bit ragged towards F.

Generally quite good. Thank you.

Steve Pritchard-Jones:

1. Good opening. Lots of detail heard. One or two slips due to overblowing. Loses clarity at times.

2. Good start but the style is not constant. A needs to be much lighter in style. Music lacks pulse at times. Needs to move forward. Some lively playing in this movement (as required).

3. mp? to start. Euph has pleasing sound. Tempo slows at times. A well done soloist. D music blends well. E sop entry is good! 9 of E 'pp'? Good to close. Soloists do well throughout.

4. Good start. I note dynamic contrast and appropriate style. At times you rush semis. C some detail lost fp < ff. Music moves along. E good. accel nice contrast. F intonation? Leads to a convincing close.

The band has a good sound but please pay attention to stylistic requirements in movement 2. Listen to each other at all times to improve intonation. Some good playing heard but not without slips. Soloists do well. Thank you.
