Ian Luxford
Ian’s interest in music started with learning a brass instrument from the tender age of 8. He progressed into the Southampton Schools music scene culminating in supporting and progressing through the Southampton Youth Brass Band and Southampton Schools Wind Band.
Ian studied music performance at Salford University, studying conducting with Roy Newsome and David King, arranging with Goff Richards and the tenor horn under the direction of Gordon Higginbottom.
On completion at Salford Ian returned to Southampton, packed away the tenor horn, and left the brass band scene in order to take up trombone and pursue his other interests of jazz, big band and latin music. He is lead trombone in the Dave Pearson big band.
In 1999 Ian somehow got persuaded to go on a brass band tour with the Pangbourne Silver Band and the slippery slope back into banding started from there. Ian began conducting New Forest Brass in 2002.
You will often see Ian helping out many of the other brass bands in our area, on anything from tenor horn to second triangle. Despite all this Ian still continues to find time to write and arrange music for the band.
Ian’s expertise has also led him to perform on several Radio 3 broadcasts, undertake session work on several commercially released albums as well as produce a number of CD recordings.
